Creating an outreach video is an effective way to show your peers that your group truly cares and to put a face to the many peers that support pregnant and parenting students. Here are some helpful tips to help you put together an outreach video!
How To
- Write a script. As a group, sit down and decide what talking points you want to emphasize. Consider the following:
- Your group’s mission statement
- Message of support to pregnant and parenting students
- Resources that your group can offer (e.g. peer-to-peer support, pregnancy tests, material support, community referral)
- Find a videographer and video editor. Whether you choose to film on your smart phone or a more high-tech video camera, make sure that you have determined who is filming, what you are filming on, and who is editing the film. Ask members in your group who have experience in making short videos, or find a friend with this experience.
- Assign roles. Consider including both members of your group and pregnant and parenting students that your group has supported. You can even ask professors or school staff to play a part!
- Decide on where to film. You may choose locations on campus that are familiar to students, or even include places like lactation rooms, the health center, etc.
- Set your dates to film. You may need more than one day. Split up filming days to accommodate your group members schedules or other participating people’s schedules. Assign a point person for filming day, and make sure that everyone knows where to meet.
- Rehearse. Practice through your lines and discuss any action items that you may want included (e.g. gestures, walking around campus).
- Pre-filming prep: Provide make-up for ladies who wish to touch up. (No shiny, reflective, or sparkly make up! Keep it matte.) Check to make sure that everyone is dressed appropriately. (No low necks and avoid short sleeves. Avoid flashy jewelry.)
- Film. Encourage your participants to speak clearly and to annunciate. Quieter members may need to speak up to be heard. Be sure to look into the camera and smile!
- Edit. Use a video editing program to create an interesting, professional looking video. Add music, add titles/subtitles, and cut clips where needed.
- Publish. Post your video on your group’s Facebook page and other social media accounts (e.g. Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, website, blog).
